JohanTuri
JohanTuriwas born in theNorthNorwegian settle
ment ofGuovdageaidnu (Kautokeino) in the year 1854.
Border closings and the displacement of his family led
to his eventual resettlement as amember of theDálm
má reindeer herding collective in Čohkkiras (Jukkas
järvi) Sweden in the 1870s, and his subsequent life as
a wolf hunter and trapper in northern Sweden until
his death in 1936.Turi had long contemplatedwriting
a book about Sámi life, beginning a first draft in Finn
ish but never finding sufficient time or the right con
text to complete such an ambitious task. But then one
day,on anore trainheaded from thenewmine atGiron
(Kiruna) to theNorwegian coastal port ofNarvik,Turi
happeneduponEmilieDemant, a youngDanish ethno
grapher and artistwho had come north in hopes of ex
periencing the disappearing way of life of Sámi herd
ers.Without a language in common, theywere at first
unable to communicate, until another passenger came
forwardwho knew both Finnish and Swedish andwho
could act as an interpreter for them. In a conversation
conveyed over four languages,Turi andDemant shared
their dreams and made each other promises: Turi
wouldhelpDemant experiencefirsthand the lifeof the
reindeer Sámi, while Demant would in turn help Turi
writehisbook.
A year later, EmilieDemant returned to northern
Sweden, having studied Sámi language at the Univer
sity ofCopenhagen and lugging aweighty dictionary in
her baggage.Turi kept hisword: arranging forDemant
to live with his brother Aslak and his family over the
course of a year so that she could experience every as
pectof traditionalherders’ inspiringbut arduous life. In
turn, after completion of her year’s adventure, andnow
armedwith concrete firsthand knowledge of the herd
ing life and linguistic competence in Turi’s dialect of
the Northern Sámi language, Demant kept her side of
the bargain. The two spent some six to eightweeks to
gether in a borrowed cabin on amountain slope above
the North Swedish lake Torneträsk. Turi wrote, this

The year 2010marked the onehundredth anniversary of thefirst publication of JohanTuri’s
Muitalus sámiidbirra (AnAccountof theSámi), thefirst secularbook everpublished inSámi
language.Turi’s book is a classic of Sámi literature and cultural history. It provides fascinat
ing insights into Sámi traditional practices, from reindeer husbandry to hunting and trap
ping, to childbirth, healing, courtship and song.Turi’sAccount provides a unique glimpse of
turnofthetwentiethcentury Sámi life, and provides fascinating points of comparisonwith
thewritingsofother indigenous authors fromotherpartsof theworld.
The translation is thework ofThomasA.DuBois.Also included in the present edition

time not in Finnish but in Sámi. Demant listened, en
couraged, and translated intoDanish. The resultwas a
uniquework: a bilingual text entitled in SámiMuitalus
sámiidbirra,AnAccount of theSámi.
The volume produced by Turi and Demant ap
peared for the first time in 1910. Turi’s masterpiece
has been translated into Swedish, English, Finnish,
French, Hungarian, Italian and Japanese. The current
English translation represents the first direct transla
tion ofTuri’swork from the original Sámi, rather than
from Demant’s Danish translation. It is appearing in
conjunction with a completely new edition of Turi’s
text, produced through careful reexamination ofTuri’s
originalmanuscript,preserved atStockholm’sNordiska
museet.
AnAccount of the Sámiwas notTuri’s last contri
bution toworld literature. He produced a furtherwork
in conjunction with Emilie Demant Hatt, his Lappish
Texts (1920), aswell as an account of his various trav
els, translated into Swedish as Från fjället (From the
Mountain; 1931). Turi’s work has been the object of
intense and insightful research in the century since its
first publication, and remains an important part of the
Sámi literary canon today. Turi’s correspondence with
Emilie Demant Hatt has been explored particularly in
a documentary study entitled Boares nauti (The Old
Wolf), written by the great modern Sámi author and
artistNilsAslakValkeapää.

JohanTuri
tidligere vinterbeiter i Finland.
samisk.
